Gettysburg CollegeGettysburg College says student fatally stabbed.
A Gettysburg College student died of apparent stab wounds early Thursday, and a fellow student was taken into custody, college officials said.
Officials at the private, liberal-arts school in south-central Pennsylvania said the victim died following the early morning incident at a house on the outskirts of town leased by the college for student housing.
The school said there was not a continuing threat to the public but provided few other details. Adams County District Attorney Shawn Wagner planned a mid-afternoon news conference, and court officials said they expected a suspect to be arraigned by videoconference.
The Gettysburg Borough Police Department, which is handling the investigation, had no comment, and the county coroner did not immediately return phone message seeking comment. Police blocked off access to an area several hundred feet around an older, two-story yellow clapboard structure that was the scene of the apparent stabbing.
Freshman Caroline Nathan said student e-mail speculation about the identities of the students involved was running rampant in the absence of details from authorities.
She said many students had left for a four-day spring weekend, contributing to the confusion.
"Everyone is gone for Easter," said Nathan, 19, of Bethesda, Md. "No one really knows where everyone is."
College President Janet Morgan Riggs issued a brief statement describing it as a tragedy for the community and the families involved.
About 2,600 students attend the 177-year-old college, whose 200-acre campus is located in this rural community where a national military park memorializes the famous Civil War battle fought here and where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous speech.
The cost of tuition, room, board and fees at Gettysburg College is about $47,000 a year.
