Area in severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m.
The Madison area is in a severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m. Saturday, perhaps putting a damper on Rhythm and Booms at Warner Park.
Hail was falling on the west side of Madison around 2:15 p.m. Saturday.
Thunderstorms are likely later in the day, said Mike Stiller of Weather Central. Clouds began moving in around noon with most of the thunderstorm activity expected to hit later Saturday and early Sunday, Stiller said.
That might make Rhythm & Booms a little wet, but still likely to happen, Stiller said.
"I think we'll have a chance of a few isolated showers," he said. "I don't think it will be a washout, I don't expect the event to be canceled, the fireworks and activities should still be OK."
Saturday's high temperature is expected to hit a comfortable 76 degrees, down from a normal of 81 at this time of year. Lows tonight are expected to dip to 56 degrees.
Winds are expected to pick up throughout the day. The National Weather Service predicts a west wind between 15 and 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 30 mph today. The NWS says storms later tonight could produce small hail and gusty winds.
Sunday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high in the low 70s and more scattered showers.
Friday's high was right at the seasonal average of 81 degrees, with a low of 64. Two-tenths of an inch of rain fell, bringing June's total to 10.89 inches as measured at Dane County Regional Airport.
