Community Honors Pioneering Heart Surgeon DeBakey
HOUSTON -- Doctor Michael Debakey is being honored here in Houston in a way no one has ever been.
DeBakey, 99, died at The Methodist Hospital Friday night from "natural causes" shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to a statement issued early Saturday by Baylor College of Medicine and Methodist Hospital. The body of Doctor Debakey will lie in repose inside the Houston City Hall rotunda from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In the nearly 70 years, that City Hall has been standing this is the first time for anyone to be given such respect.
The open casket visitation is expected to draw thousands. Houston's famous heart surgeon is dressed in surgical scrubs, his white doctor's coat and he's wearing his watch, eyeglasses and a surgical cap.
Houstonians who are stopping by to pay their respects include the doctor's patients, colleagues, loved ones and perfect strangers.
